Chatty Girl

My mother-in-law reminded me a few days ago that there are certain things that your baby does that seem unforgettable in the moment, then months later you start wondering what exactly happened when. Here is my attempt to document and thus better remember these gems.

"Peeeeash" = please

This will invariably get her whatever she wants, its just too cute!

"Veeeee" = oui

"Mehhh" = merci

"Yah" = yes. Pretty much her current answer to all our questions. However, if she sees something she really wants, she'll very excitedly and persistently say:
"yah, yah, yah, peeash, peash, yah yah"

V just turned 18 months corrected this week! The oh so dreaded neurodevelopment meeting is going to be any day now, we are just waiting for the call.

18 Months, Sickness Free!

I cannot believe we made it! Our girly has officially lived for 18 months sickness free! Not a sniffle, rash, cough in sight! After hearing from the respirologist the scary statistic that about 50% of preemies with bronchopulmonary dysplasia end up rehospitalized in the first 12 months, I never would have believed that we were going to make it all the way to 18!

How did we do it? Many many gallons of Purell later (they really should be a post sponsor.. pretty please?), months and months of super strict isolation tactics, having the freedom for one of us to stay home with V and a solid dose of luck!

Here is a peek into the cold busting tricks we used (the things that OCD dreams are made of...):

  • While in the NICU, we would watch staff like hawks, making sure they always disinfect their hands before touching the isolette or V. We also made sure that those who seemed sick wore masks. (Yes, unfortunately some of these practices did not seem to be obvious to certain staff...)
  • Every time anyone entered our house, including ourselves, the very first stop was the sink for a thorough washing of the hands.
  • Each bag and purse has multiple containers of Purell.
  • No jewelry or watch wearing outside of the house (those things pick up lots of gross stuff!)
  • No one was allowed in contact with V after they had been sick until 2 weeks of being symptom-free
  • All groceries had their own shelf in the fridge or a place in the pantry that they hung out for 48 hours after having been bought (have you SEEN how people open mouth cough on everything at the grocery store?! Ugggghhhh)
  • We visit public places first thing in the morning, including the Biodome where there is literally no one until 1 hour post opening!
  • Early visits are also our approach to doctor visits and physio. Usually cleaning crew go by in the evenings after clinic hours so all the surfaces should theoretically be wiped clean.
  • If a coworker is sick, I wear a mask to remind myself not to touch my face and to constantly wash my hands (this is easier because I work in a hospital).
  • We tried to teach ourselves just generally not to touch our faces, since that is how many germs are spread!
Now I can hear some (probably non preemie parents - yes yes, the millions of non preemie parents who read this blog) people saying that V needs to be building up her immunity and that getting sick is important. Yes. I hear you. Except for the fact that her development is a little borderline and I'm pretty sure that a hospital stay would not be helpful in developing her teeny muscles. Plus, our pediatric respirologist shared with us that the longer she can go without getting sick the better, because the larger she gets, the more healthy lung tissue she has created and the less likely it is going to overwhelm her. And at a wee 18 lbs, she is not exactly a heavyweight unfortunately. Also, apparently getting a lung infection causes inflammation that could put V at higher risk for chronic lung problems in the future. She has tons of time to catch all the lovely childhood diseases and build her immune system. For now, we're concentrating on building her lungs!

The one issue with her having never been sick is that we have no idea how she will respond when she finally does. Which encourages us to continue is our cycle of crazy isolation... because obviously it has been working for us... We are starting to wonder though, when will it be safe to stop all this?

Why telling me not to worry infuriates me!

I told a colleague of mine the other day how proud I was that V took her first steps. I also mentionned how releaved I was because it seemed to put her back on the normal motor development track.

Her response surprised and rather upset me. She said : "Well my daughter walked at 16 months and I never worried about it. She turned out great!" Keep in mind that this colleague knows all about our preemie escapade and how far V has come. While I appreciate that the feeling behind it was to encourage or reassure me, I always feel frustrated by comments like those.

Another fav of mine is (after discussing something that is particularly worrying me) : "Welcome to the parent club." Since, you know, worrying about how your child does in karate, if they get a date to prom or about them getting good grades in math is exactly the same thing as worrying about a central part of their development that could completely alter the entire rest of their life as well as yours... exactly the same thing!!

I was trying to wrap my brain around what exactly bothers me about the comments, why they annoy me so much and I think I have figured it out. They bother me because they minimize and completely undermine my feelings. Its as though them telling me not to worry is equivalent to telling me I have no reason to worry, that I am working myself up into a worry fit for absolutely no reason, that I must be crazy or something.

This realization then kind of made me wonder how many times I had done that. Offered false or empty reassurances... "Of course you'll pass your test"... "I'm sure you'll beat this, you're so strong"...

I guess my point is that when someone is telling you about either a legitimate worry of theirs or a triumph over some great difficulty, chances are that by telling them they have or had nothing to worry about in the first place will only make them feel crappy. I'm sure lots of other people have talked about this before, I guess I'm just realizing it now and feel its worthwhile to share! Validation and active listening in those cases would have been a lot better, for me anyway...

To get back to my colleague, I guess a great response would have been amazement and awe at my daughter's great accomplishment... but then again isn't that just always the best answer to moms bragging?!

Steps at last... I think?

While I was at work this afternoon, our little V seems to have taken her first steps. She stepped (or tripped perhaps) from her Dada's arms to a chair. This is a distinct improvement from the insta crumble to the ground she had been doing up to now.

I'm of the opinion that all milestones are initially flukes, so here's to the biggest one yet! At just over fifteen months corrected and 28 days from her 18 months actual. Is it funny that she made it under the 18 month mark is a big deal for me?

Extra sweet for us is the fact that today is our 9 year "dating anniversary".

Hoorah!!!

Hihi this face though!!

Lovely Spring Walk

After a grueling winter and a scary flu/RSV season, we finally decided to pull out our good old BOB stroller (bought second hand because yowza full price is scary!) and went for a lively spring stroll!

Miss V seemed very unsure at first...

But quickly fell asleep as D and I chatted away. It was nice to get out of the house and enjoy some family time!

This summer is going to be great!!

Update on Weight

I was rereading some old posts (whats with the nostalgia?!)

It got me thinking about how long we have been struggling-obsessed-consumed by V's weight. Right from birth, at 910g. Actually, no, before that! We were following her projected weight via ultrasound weeks before she was even born.

I don't think this focusing on weight has done all that much good really. I mean, sure, it got use to enrich her milk, which seemed to have somewhat of an effect. But really, in the NICU, we would celebrate one days of 100g increase and then come crashing down the next when she gained only 10g. The truth probably was simply somewhere in between and she gained an average of 55g per day. And knowing versus not on a DAILY basis was more of a distraction than anything. In fact, our lactation consultant was telling us that they were soon going to stop weighing daily because they found that it discouraged moms from continuing breastfeeding... Its hard to march on with breastfeeding when you are obsessing about intake and there is no way but time at the breast to measure how much your baby is actually ingesting. *insert lots of arguments with Mr. D here about how effective my initial breastfeeding was* Legitimate concerns really, she was only 5th percentile and it really didn't look as though she was taking all that much in. In the end we stuck with it and I'm fairly certain there would not have been any weight difference either way.

My Preemie Pregnancy Story - part 1

This story has taken me much longer than expected to work up the courage to write down... I guess a part of me is still sad about having missed out on the expected "normal" third trimester and delivery.

Here goes:

My pregnancy started off great! A tiny bit of nausea, but nothing I couldn't live quite confortably with!

The very first ultrasound was great! Perfect size for predicted gestational age. We found out we were going to have a little girl and were super excited! Those were the best days of blissful ignorance of what was to come.

We went on to have another U/S at around 16 weeks. There they found that V had a persistent left vena cava. I've talked about that before here. Freak out, freak out and some more freak out... Little did I know this would actually turn out to be the least of our worries. Funny how that is... Looking back it really puts into perspective how sometimes what I make out to be the scariest thing is really nothing to worry about afterall.

Throw back Milestones

I was looking back at some posts and realized I never posted this one... Crazy how I'm less worried about that appointment, but still generally apprehensive about milestone!

"A few weeks back we went to our first neurodevelopment appointment. Miss V was almost 7 weeks corrected age at the time. Before this appointment, I thought she was doing quite well, lots of smiles, some giggles, she seemed to be tracking and was starting to lift her head from side to side when she was doing her tummy time.

Turns out she was not doing so well. During the entire exam, the doctor and physio kept making remarks to each other that did not sound so great : "look at her left sided preference" or "hmmmm, she is startling a lot", etc.

I worry a lot about whether or not Miss V. will hit her milestones on time.

I'm not sure if it is because she was born at 29 weeks so has been around 11 weeks more than you average baby, but I'm starting to get impatient for her to start reaching various milestones. I realize she is only 8 weeks corrected age, but she has been around for such a long time, surely she should be sitting, or saying her first word or running a small business by now!!

I wonder if this impatience is just me, typical to preemie parents or something everyone experiences... I've heard the first three months tend to be a blur, what with constant feeding, diaper changing, very little sleep, learning how to take care of your sweetheart. For us it has been a bit different, we had 77 days in the NICU and step down units to get to know our little lady, we developed our routine long before heading home! The fact that her feeding schedule was so regimented at the hospital (every three hours, on the hour) got Miss V. used to regular feeding I suppose; despite feeding her strictly on demand, she tends to feed quite regularly every three hours and a bit less at night. As such, we have been getting quite a reasonable amount of sleep! Which makes these weeks at home less of a sleepy blur."

I'm soooo glad they were wrong about the whole side preference business! Nice to see how far V's come!

Blurry, but I still love it!!

Getting into trouble again the sneaky girl!

Meow meow

Its been clear for quite some time now that V's favorite animal is a cat. Probably because we own the nicest, most docile furball possible. Anyway, over the past week or two, we have discovered that the very best way to make V laugh is to incorporate anything cat-themed into what we are doing.

Singing "I know you, I walked with you once upon a dream...". Yawn.

But, sing: "I know MIUuuu, I walked with miuuuuu once upon a kittycat". Barrels of giggles! Seriously, she cannot get enough of it!!

Mommy trying to run after her... Soso entertaining. But if we pretend the cat is (I mentionned he is incredibly docile, right?) and she can barely hold it together. Think little pile of laughing lady on the ground. I love it!

Morning crĂŞpes? Yummy, but old news. A cat shaped crĂŞpe? Gets spared from being devoured and is showered in kisses instead.

I'm loving this phase!

Butterflies

As we approach the end of lockdown #2, D & I decided we would attempt something way outside our comfort zone: head out to the insectarium to see the butterfly exhibit with little miss V.

It turned out much better than expected! We arrived right at opening on a weekday and there were only a handful of amateur photographers who were visibly NOT sick. Our sweetheart loved all the butterflies and flowers! Even though the insectarium is right downtown, I guess by getting there early enough on a Tuesday, we were able to stay away from oh so scary crowds.

It was really great to see V interact with a new environment!

A Cardboard Box

Things have been going quite well at our house lately. I am back at work, still no cold or virus of any kind in sight for V, she is home with her daddy till the end of next winter unless she catches a bad cold an handles it well, and she has been progressing well on the neurodevelopment front, although we will only truly know know if she has lasting motor sequelae from being a premie once she starts walking.

At 14 months corrected she has not yet started to walk. I felt very comfortable with that fact until about 2 weeks ago when my good friend's baby took her first steps at ten months. Its been said a billion times I'm sure, but here I go adding my voice to the group... I'm super happy and proud of my friend's baby, the little champ! And I'm also incredibly pround of my sweet V!! There's just nothing quite like a baby that was born 6 months after yours speeding ahead of yours to remind you that your darling mayindeed have some developmental delays and more struggles ahead.

The thing is I'm convinced V would be able to walk. She cruises like a total champ!! I think what is stopping her is that she is scared of falling. Now how on earth am I supposed to show her not to be scared? When I try to entice her toget something, she swiftly plops down onto all fours and speeds across the floor. How can I keep her on her feet?

To finish, some pics of her playing with the best of toys : the magical cardboard box!

p.s. these blocks are pretty great too!

Furniture Cruizer

Just shy of her 1 year corrected, V has amazed us again by achieving furniture cruizing! She we have to coax her with pretty red books (her favourite colour) or a remote, but the cruizing is all her!

I can hardly believe she was still hospitalized at this time last year. Unreal.

The Night Before Christmas - Improved Healthier Version!

Like every year, on December 24th, we cuddled up together and read Twas The Night Before ChristmasThis year was special though because it was the first time we did it as a little family! Last year, V was still hospitalized.

As Dada read through it, we realized that this old St-Nick character, though jolly, has some pretty bad habits! Namely, smoking the pipe. Now, there will be no smoking anywhere near our little sweetie, what with her BPD and all, so we decided to change it.

Here's the passage I am referring to:

"The stump of a pipe he held tight in his teeth,
And the smoke it encircled his head like a wreath."

And here is what we changed it to:

"The milk that he drank was good for his teeth,
and the cookie he ate was shaped like a wreath"

So there you have it, an updated, preemie friendly version of 'Twas the Night Before Christmas!

Here's wishing you all a healthy 2015!

Who said pointing was rude?

For the past 3 weeks or so V has just started exploding in her communication skills. It all started with her pointing to a Budha head that we have in our hallway and saying buuhhba (or baba or nothing). So we started asking her where stuff is and her current list of mostly correct answers are:

Budha
Star
Ball
Cow
Baby
Strippey bear
Monster
Book
Cube
Flower
Barn
Cheerio
Mama
Dada
Mina
Grandpapa

I just can't believe it!

Can't stop, won't stop the pointing!

My husband and I now get a serious workout running from one object to another around the house as she points away. This is a bit of a problem when bedtime comes around, because she prefers to point than to sleep. But thats ok, sleep wins out in the end. For now.

Speaking of language development I saw a really cool TED talk about it here:

11 months old!

Little sweetie is less than a month away from being a whole year old!!!

I am a little apprehensive about the so-called "anniversary season" coming up around the corner, but she has been doing some nice progress both on the physical front and socially, so I'm hoping that all the good news with lighten the blow of remembering some pretty scary times!

Current nicknames : cocotte, pumpkin pie

Weight and height... deferred until weigh in for her 1 year doctor's appointment (and yucky vaccines!)

Medical:

Still no respiratory infections for sweetie, or any sickness at all really! We've been trying really really hard to keep her protected from any possible infection! Anyone else scared about enterovirus D68?!

Her eyes seem to be focusing well, no crossed-eyeness for now, so I'm guessing the hypermetropia is under control.

Eating:

She is eating 3 meals a day and still breastfeeding despite the fact that I have returned to work. Good thing I froze so much milk up when she was in the NICU! Favorite food right now : Raspberries!

Diapers:

Using size 3! They seem a little big, but all the better to cover her over night. Our fabric diapers need a stripping and since I have a front load washer, that task has been put off for now.

Toys:

She loves playing with blocks and squeeky toys!

Development:

October first she pivoted for the first time!! It was amazing!!! She has become so much more mobile recently, rolling back to front and back again. Now we are onto trying to get her to go from tummy time to sitting on her own.

Socially, she is way more giggly than before. Still saying mamamama like it is going out of style, but also saying baba, grrrrrampa, dada, and today she started saying buuuhhh. There are also a bunch of other sounds that are difficult to pin point, but there has definitely been some progress there.

She is banging toys together and pincer grasping I believe.

For the official development update, we'll have to wait till October 27th for our next neurodevelopment appointment.

Gosh I love this girl! Now to try to figure out this whole work/home life balance!

10 months old (7 corrected)

Current Nicknames :
Cocotine
Weight :
Not sure because its been a while, but definitely over 14lbs.
Medical Issues :
Thankfully nothing too bad to report here! Physio has been going well, you are within corrected age milestones.

We had an ophthalmology appointment and you have a bit of hypermetropia. No need for glasses just yet, but we need to watch out for crossed eyes. The doctor didn't seem too concerned, our next apt is only in a year.
Sleep:
You had a solid few months of waking up every hour, but now by being a bit more rigourous with our bedtime routine, you wake up every 3-4 hours.
Clothes/Diapers:
You wear a mix of 3-6 and 6-9 month cloths! You are on size 2-3 disposable diapers and your small Fuzzibunz perfect size still fit you wonderfully!
Diet:
So much new solid food! Your favorite is "pearvocado", but you've also tried banana, apple, green beans, peas, potatoes, sweet potatoes, pears, nectarines, asparagus, rice, oats, turkey and lamb.
Baby Gear Love:
Your favorite game is "peakaboo barn" on the iPad, we can get you to sit a solid 5-10 minutes button mashing away at it. Otherwise, you really like the activity table!

You still really enjoy plastic rings, especially bringing them up to your mouth and trying to munch on them!

Your favorite book is "if I were a monkey"
Milestones/Firsts
You can sit unsupported a good while and have started to show backwards righting reflexes.

Still having a rough time rolling from back to front, but you have definitely done it on your own.

You say Mamama, bababa and grrrrrrrr/grrrrrrma/grrrrrranpapa all day long!!!
So much lalalalove!

Rolling rolling rolling

My little sweetheart has been showing signs of actually wanting to roll for a few weeks, and has been rolling from tummy to back for a little while also.

Today she finally rolled from back to front!!! She had been trying so hard, but that darn extension tendancy preemies have was blocking her. Today she vanquished it, at 6 1/2 months corrected. I am one proud Mama!!!

Growing pains

These past few weeks have been a little difficult on the sleep front. We think its because little V has been working on growing her two front teeth, but its hard to tell exactly what is at cause... She has been waking up screaming, sometimes every hour, and while she used to fall back asleep with a little back rub, now her screaming persists until we pick her up. Could it be night terrors? Separation anxiety? Gas? Teeth? I really can't wait until she can speak so that these little mysteries become clearer!

In the meantime, we tried our hand at our first breastmilk popsicle, V really enjoyed it!!

We used the pacifier protector as amold, clipped the pacifier in, and voilĂ !
